An interesting article in Fast Company this week tries to help junior employees overcome their hesitation to pursue the things they want. While the authors point out why younger employees may hesitate to speak up, they also demonstrate the consequences to you as an employer if they keep their thoughts to themselves.
While the article focuses on the perspective of the employee, it’s useful for you as the boss to read it, too. You may have forgotten what it’s like to be the new kid on the block, and this will remind you of how difficult it can be to speak up, even when you know you should. So, occasionally, try to put yourself in your employees’ shoes, and be proactive about asking them what’s going on, and what might help them do better, rather than waiting for them to come to you.
