Never Give Up

Marathon runners have many sayings, one of which is “The race truly begins when you are ready to quit.” The point here is that when you feel like giving up, that’s when you need to dig deep and call upon all the strength you have. Nobody wants to stop 10 kilometers from the Finish, so when your body says “I’m done,” your mind has to overcome it and keep pushing you forward.

This is the kind of mentality you want in your employees. It’s easy to do well when everything is going fine, but you want people who will step up to the challenge when things are NOT going fine. That’s what separates the strongest employees from the ones who are replaceable.

Does that mean you should only hire employees who are marathon runners? Not necessarily (though that would be an interesting workplace). What it DOES mean, though, is that you need to hire people with that spirit, and reinforce it in your workplace. They don’t need to actually be marathon runners, but they need the same mentality.

And I’m not just saying that because I ran the Athens Marathon yesterday.
