Rhythmic Workplaces

Hmmm…

Jocelyn Glei writes at 99U about the rhythms of work vs the rhythms of creative labor. She highlights what she sees as the differentiation between the two, and discusses how your ability to pursue work effectively is under your control more so than pursuing creative labor effectively. Creativity, it seems, may be subject to different constraints, suggesting that the way we organize for creative labor may need to be different. She notes, for example, that when it comes to methods for increasing your ability to do creative work,

We can do much to create the time, the space, and the expertise that lead to incredible creative work. But there is no silver bullet; there is no “time-saving device” or productivity system that is going to alter the rhythm of invention.

I’m curious what others think. Is creative work just like any other type of work, in that there are resource constraints, timing requirements, physical necessities…in other words, all work requires the same factors (though how they are employed may differ)? Or is there something so inherently different about creative labor that it requires a completely different approach to the concept of “work?”

What do you think?
