Take a Break
Even people who love what they do need a break.
One of the nice things about leading talented people is that very often they are passionate about what they do. If you have people who do not mind going to work, or are in fact looking forward to it, that’s a good thing. Speaking for myself, my return to academia a few years ago left me about 1000% happier than I was when I was stuck in a government bureaucracy; enjoying your work can really confer some great benefits. Today’s employees tend to blur the line between work life and personal life to the point where they seem to always be thinking about their work interests in some way, no matter where they are.
While that seems great for the person leading these employees — it’s nice to have employees who are truly passionate about the work they do for you — it really will help if they take a break from it every now and then. Public holidays are a good time for that, but taking vacation days, even if they do not travel anywhere, help as well. Encourage your team to set aside work this weekend; sure, maybe they are visiting family members and want to tell them all about this great job (and of course, the great boss they have) and that’s ok, but they should not excuse themselves from dinner to go do some website design or crunch some numbers. Suggest to them that they leave work behind for a few days (it will be there when they get back) and they will return fresh and clear-headed, ready to come up with amazing new ideas.
That goes for you, too, of course. Even bosses need a break.
