Here’s a quick quiz: ask yourself, “Why should anyone follow me?”
If you are in a leadership position, it’s a good thing to be able to answer. If you aspire to be a leader, it can give you some direction as you develop your abilities.
How you answer this question (if you are honest about it…and if you’re not, you’re only hurting yourself) will give you a good sense of your strengths. A closer look will help you identify the gaps, the attributes that you wish you had or that would be useful, but which are missing. Strengths are important because you should focus on those in your work, and the gaps are important because they help you focus your development efforts.
Of course, if you cannot come up with an answer, you could be in big trouble. Time to get to work.
